Similarly, there is a need to observe that there are varying differences towards the death within the Canadian and American societies. In her article that was published in the Los Angeles Times in June 2017, Karlamangla examines the statistics of those who had requested for euthanasia and observes that the majority of them were whites. This is affirmed by Nirappil (2018) who observes that among those who had inquired about assisted deaths, none of them was black. This implies that whites were more likely to seek for assisted deaths as compared to blacks. The differences in seeking for assisted deaths is influenced by the fact that blacks and whites differ in the way the perceive death, with blacks perceiving death as something that should be avoided, while the whites’ culture encourage people to seek to die while close to their relatives. Therefore, while on a grander scale, North American culture promotes the notion that one can triumph over death by choosing when and how to die, it important to clarify that there are micro-cultures in this community that have different and opposite perceptions towards death.
In conclusion, an analysis of the three articles on the legalisation of euthanasia in North America that were published between 2017 and 2018 in different newspapers indicate that the North American society’s culture perceive death as something that can be triumphed upon by determining when and where to die. Importantly, family reunion at the time of death plays a critical role in this culture, with those who seek assisted dying perceive such reunion as a moment to show that one has died a dignified death. Whereas this is the case, minority communities such as the African Americans perceive death as something that should be avoided and as such, they would seek to prolong their lives at all cost.
