Apart from the positive and negative transformations in the modern society, there is a need to observe that attention and distraction are among the key issues that emerge in the work of Nelson, Davidson and Twenge. To begin with, Twenge uses the attention to the self as a key platform to support her arguments on the differences between baby boomers and the GenMe generations (489). In this case, she argues that the modern generation pay more attention to the self as compared to previous generations that focused on the happiness of the entire society. On her part, Davidson relies on attention of learners to argue that technology plays a critical role in improving the learners’ experience in the modern learning environment (56). Thus, through focusing on the learners’ attention, Davidson manages to call for an overall of the modern learning environment in order to embrace digital technology in the learning process. Whereas this is the case, Nelson uses distraction as a way to argue her case against technology in the modern society. In particular, she reiterates technology distract people from the acknowledging the value of human life by making these insensitive towards violence (310). Therefore, she cautious that the society needs to be careful as it embraces technology.

Speaking from this perspective, there is a need to observe that the three scholars have different perspective towards the ideal society. Arguably, Davidson promotes the need for interconnectedness among people using technology, and as such, emphasises the element that an ideal society is the one that continues to embrace different digital technologies. However, Nelson differs and argues that technology has harmful effects on society and as such, an ideal society should be less dependent on digital technology. On her part, Twenge promotes the aspect that an ideal society needs to focus on promoting the self-esteem of individuals and as such, elements such as technology could play a critical role in promoting self-expression. Therefore, from the analysis of the three articles, it is evident that the differences in the perception towards technology play a critical role in defining the ideal society.

In conclusion, apart from the impacts of technology, there is a significant shift in the values and perceptions in the modern society, which has significantly transformed the way people relate with themselves and with others. Notably, from the analysis of the three articles, it emerges that the modern society has not only changed because of the impact of technology but also because of transformation in its values. In particular, there is a need to observe that whereas technology has helped improve the creativity and collaboration of learners, it has contributed an emergence of an insensitive population towards the violence and terror. Moreover, the changing values of society imply that there is an increased focus on the self, which could eventually lead to selfishness and narcissism in the modern society.
