With regard to Lady Macbeth, Malcolm’s reference to her as fiend-like only describes her at the beginning of the play. Arguably, from an ethical point of view, Lady Malcolm is expected to hold the life of her master in high esteem and more so the king. Note that she acknowledges that they together with what they owned belonged to the king when King Duncan comes to dine in her house. Whereas this is the case, Lady Macbeth engages in unethical behavior by motivating her husband to murder the king. Note that when her husband shows a second thought on murdering the king, she taunts him and notes that her husband will as a coward in his own esteem if he failed to attain what he desires (Rosenberg, 2013). Whereas this is the case, Malcolm cannot refer to her entire life as a person who was fiend-like. This is as a result of the fact that her element of being possessed and mad near the end of her life is marred with remorse for the crimes she had committed in life, with particular reference to bloodshed. In this case, Lady Macbeth feels guilty near the end of her life and portrays this in her sleep walking dreams that she desired to have her hands washed off the blood she had shed in life. This drives her to commit suicide because she could not bear the guilty for her crimes. From an ethical perspective, she realizes that what she had done was wrong and as such, Malcolm’s reference to her as fiend-like cannot hold at the end of her life.

In conclusion, ambition in a person’s life need to be guided by ethics otherwise it could lead to destruction. With this in mind, Malcolm is absolutely right in referring to Macbeth as a “butcher”. Arguably, whereas Macbeth understood the consequences of his actions and how they would impact his life, he did not hesitate to shed blood as long as this helped protect his ascension and holding onto power. In this, from an ethical perspective, he ignored an ethical approach to making critical decisions concerning his ambition, thus causing him to kill and murder many innocent people including King Duncan of Scotland. On the other hand, Malcolm’s reference to Lady Macbeth as “fiend-like” is only applicable at the beginning of the play. Note that Lady Macbeth did not see it unethical to encourage her husband to murder their own visitor, the king. However, later in life, she realized that what she had done was unethical and as such, was filled with remorse for her actions. Therefore, it would not be accurate to refer to her as “fiend-like” at this point in life.
