One of the critical aspects to note about the Mindscan process regards what happens to the Mindscan (artificial body) and the shed skin (biological body). Note that the interaction between the two occurs only when the biological person is allowed to see the artificial body that will be a new home for his consciousness. Once the transfer process is completed, the biological body or person is transferred to High Eden, a luxurious place located on the moon where the person will live for the rest of his or her life until he dies (Sawyer, 2005). When the person in question dies, his body is cremated and since it is considered that the person still lives on earth, there are no markers or graves to indicate his final resting place. On the other hand, after being uploaded with consciousness, the Mindscan (artificial body) is allowed to return back to society and assume the identity of the person whose consciousness it carries. Furthermore, the Mindscan is upgraded once in a while as technology advances.

Essay 2 论文

Despite the argument that Sawyer presents in his novel that the Mindscan was capable of replicating every movement that a human had ever before, such as Karen’s ability to execute graceful moves, an analysis of the issue from a biological perspective proves otherwise. Arguably, the neuronal network plays a critical role in facilitating both conscious and unconscious movement of the human body. Whereas this is the case, Sawyer (2005) observes that the scanning chamber that replicated the consciousness of the real human beings only capture the snapshot of the mind and as such, preserved a human being’s consciousness.

Whereas this is the case, Sawyer (2005) does not in any way indicate whether the scanning chambers replicated the neuronal networks of the people that wanted their consciousness replicated. Note that while such consciousness could play a critical role in integrating the old memories of a person into the artificial bodies, it may not necessarily help replicate the movement of the person in question considering the fact that such movement depends heavily on their neuronal networks. For example, when one raised up his or her hand, even when his or her eyes are closed, one can gauge whether he or she has raised the hand over his head or not. Similarly, the existence of neuronal networks plays a critical role in controlling the unconscious movement of individuals. In this case, neuronal network helps in stimulating reflex actions that are not dependent on conscious stimulation of movement. For example, if one sense heat that is beyond certain temperatures, one is likely to pull away his or her hand rapidly from the fire “without even thinking” to avoid getting burned. Speaking from this point of view, it is impossible for Mindscan Karen to execute graceful moves or be a skilful driver after the transfer due to the fact that whereas the scanning chamber capture her consciousness and as such her memories of what she had done in the past, it did not capture the neuronal network that is necessary to control movement both consciously and unconsciously. Notably, from the account of the incidence where the dog, Clamhead, bit Mindscan Jake, Sawyer (2005) notes there was totally no reaction from Jake to indicate reflex action as a way to avoid being bitten or even a try to get off the dog from biting him. This is an indication that both Mindscan Jake and Karen lacked neuronal network to control their movement. Therefore, whereas Mindscan Karen could have memories of executing graceful moves or driving skilful, executing such actions were difficult since it lacked the framework to execute and control movement in a certain way.
