Leaders and leadership play a critical role in the implementation of operational changes in organisations. In this case, apart from identifying the desired change, leaders play an instrumental role in guiding the organisation in question through the entire change process. Speaking from this point of view, this report explores in detail the role and importance of leaders and leadership in modern business. The report will then present a summary of a case study on a company whose leadership played a critical role in helping implement change. The report will then identify a leadership model and apply it Spark New Zealand with respect to the implementation of operational change. The success of businesses and organisations not only in the 21st century but also in the past is often attributed to leaders and the leadership they have put in place. In this regards, for a group of people to achieve specific goals, they need a leader. Speaking from this perspective, a leader is defined as a person who exercises greater control over others and as such, influences them towards achieving certain objectives (Rosenbach, Taylor & Youndt, 2018). Similarly, Rosenbach, Taylor and Youndt (2018) define leadership as the process of getting people to work together through the influence of their leader, thus making it possible for them to achieve specific defined goals and/or objectives. Importantly, in both definitions influence over a group of people is a critical element, which implies that leaders and leadership cannot exist without the element of influence.
