Gaining an understanding on an organisation’s environment, and developing and implementing strategies to address the challenges that arise thereof is a necessary ingredient that helps organisations achieve their success. The findings in this study reveal that technology is among the critical dimension of the general environment that has a significant impact on Luxottica. In particular, the changing technology has created a platform for this company to redefine its approach in the way it serves its customers. Apart from technology, Luxottica is also impacted by regulators, who are a critical dimension of this company’s specific environment. This study found out that regulators determine how this company operates and in one particular case, delayed its processing of merging with a French company, Essilor, for 20 months. Apart from the specific and the general environment, the findings also indicate that Luxottica employs an active approach to ethics and corporate social responsibility. This company has integrated ethical and social responsibility practice in its organisational culture. This is unlike some organisations that perceive social responsibility as a demand imposed upon them by the society in which they operate. Lastly, this study established that Luxottica has established a flexible culture that not only supports diversity but also integrates fun in this company’s working environment.

The organisational environment is one of the factors that have a significant influence on the operations and as such, the performance of businesses and organisations. Researchers and scholars observe that for an organisation to be successful, it needs to understand its environment and as such, develop appropriate strategies to deal with it (Robbins et al. 2016, p. 33). Organisations have both general and specific environments, which impacts their operations in different dimensions. This paper will first explore the general environment and identify a specific dimension of this environment that has an impact on Luxottica. The paper will then examine the specific environment of this company, and identify the dimension of a specific environment that has had an impact on it in 2017 and 2018. The third section of the paper will consider the ethical and corporate social responsibility dimensions of Luxottica, while the last section will consider its organisational culture.
