Research aim 研究目的

This study aims at evaluating the effectiveness of smoking control policies in motivating continues smokers to quit smoking. To achieve its objectives, the study will address the following research questions:

Study design 研究设计

This research adopted a qualitative case study as its study design. Speaking from this perspective, the research will conduct a case study on continuing smokers and evaluate their perception towards the smoking control policies. Arguably, there are a number of factors that motivates this study to adopt a case study approach. To begin with, the study will be concerned with learning about the experiences of continuing smokers in the society, and their experiences as far as quitting smoking was concerned. In this regard, the study is interested in unravelling their perception towards different smoking control policies, and whether such policies have in any way motivated them to think about quitting smoking. Importantly, Nieswiadomy and Bailey (2017) observes that for a case study to qualify as a qualitative in nature, the researcher must be interested in the actual experiences of the elements under study rather than acquiring results for the purposes of generalisation. Apart from the qualitative case study, this study will conduct in-depth interviews to collect data. In this regard, the study will conduct semi-structured interviews with the participants in the case study. Notably, whereas this interview allows the researcher to ask open-ended questions, the questions are prepared early in advance. According to Given (2008), this interview approach helps the researcher to not only introduce the topics of interest during interviews, but it also help ensure that the entire interview remains within the confines of the topic under discussion.

Sample, sampling and recruitment 样品、抽样和征聘

This study will employ purpose sampling to select individuals to be interviewed for this study. In reference to Devers and Frankel (2000), purposive sampling provides the researcher with an avenue to select samples that are either typical cases, deviant or extreme cases, or disconfirming cases. With regard to this study, purposive sampling will be instrumental in helping recruit extreme case samples, that is, people who are heavily addicted to smoking. Importantly, the study will consider a sample size of between 5 and 10 respondents. The choice of this sample size is based on the fact that it will take a shorter and resources to recruit considering the time and financial constraints. Importantly, the study will target students who smoke and as such, it will rely on Facebook to recruit them. In reference to Wang (2015), close to 80 percent of the young people above the age of 18 years use Facebook and other social media platform. Therefore, it is easier to use this platform to recruit them to participate in this research.
