1.1 A brief outline of the history of the Treaty of Waitangi.
The Treaty of Waitangi, the document written both in English and Māori, traces its history way back to February 6, 1840 when it was first signed (Orange, 2015). This treaty between the British and the Māori gave the former sovereignty over New Zealand and helped their safeguard their commercial interests, protect the Māori, and ensure the British migrants did not engage in unruly behaviour. Importantly, the British sought to use this treaty as a way to annex New Zealand and gain a legal claim over it as its territory in a peace way (Orange, 2015). This would also allow the British to take care of the humanitarian needs of the Māori, and discourage them from perceiving further British intrusion as a threat. For the modern business environment, this treaty safeguards the rights and privileges of both the New Zealand natives and the migrants, and well as promote an environment where each can own property and trade freely without undermining aspects such as the fundamental rights and culture of each other.
1.2 A brief outline of the three articles of the Treaty acknowledging both the te reo Māori and English interpretations.
The first article of the treaty in English stipulated that the United Tribes of New Zealand’s Confederation chiefs cede their sovereign powers and rights that they had, exercised or were supposed to exercise to her Majesty the Queen of England (Rimmer, 2015). On the other hand, the te reo Māori interpretation stipulated that the Confederation gave her Majesty the Queen the power and authority to govern their land for ever.
The second article of the treaty in English interpretation reiterates that while her Majesty the Queen of England would protect the rights of New Zealand’s Tribes and their Chiefs as far as ownership of property and doing business is concerned, she on the other hand had a right to purchase their lands based on the agreed upon prices. This same article in te reo Māori interpretation emphasize that the Queen of England would offer protection of the Tribes of New Zealand and their Chiefs as far as exercising their chieftainship over every treasure, land and village in their possession while in turn, they would sell their land at an agreed upon price to the Queen or to her agent (Rimmer, 2015).
