The Compact Disc 光盘
Man has over the years developed different inventions, which has not only transformed his life but also the way he perceives life. One of the inventions that brought a revolution in the lives of people in the 20th century is the compact disc, which was invented by Philips and Sony. The compact disc plays an instrumental role in storing digital data. Its prototypes were first developed in the late 1970s, while the actual compact disc that was first released to the market in 1982.[ Taylor-Sakyi, Kevin, “Big data: Understanding big data,” arXiv preprint arXiv:1601.04602 (2016): 4.] Importantly, the development of this innovation was motivated by the desire replace the personal computer hard drive, which was only capable of storing a maximum of 10 megabytes. Note that the company disc could store between 680 and 700 megabytes of data or a maximum of 80 minutes of audio recording.[ David Reed, A balanced introduction to computer science (Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall, 2008), 7.] Therefore, its release in 1982 created a platform for storage and sharing of more data, and particularly audio data recordings.

An analysis of the history of the company disc indicates that its Philips and Sony independently developed its prototypes in the end of 1970s. Whereas these companies initially worked independently in the developing the compact disc, they agreed to form a team to collaborate on the development of this innovation. Notably, through this collaboration, Sony shared the knowledge on error correcting techniques while Philips shared knowledge on digital storage technique.[ Lori Rosenkopf and Atul Nerkar, “Beyond local search: boundary‐spanning, exploration, and impact in the optical disk industry,” Strategic Management Journal 22, no. 4 (2001): 290.] Sony was established in 1946 after the Second World War, while Philips was established in 1891. Importantly, one of the critical aspects to note about the compact disc is the fact that it traces its history to James T. Russell in 1966. Born in Bremerton, Washington, in 1931, Russell graduated from Reed College in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts (Physics) degree.[ Doris Simonis, Inventors and inventions (New York: Marshall Cavendish, 2007), 1286.] In 1965, Russell developed the concept of optical digital recording and playback, which formed a critical foundation in the invention of the compact disc.[ Simonis, 1287.] Importantly, he also worked with the Philips and the Sony taskforce in developing the compact disc. Therefore, Philips and Sony relied on the optical digital recording and playback technology that Russell had developed almost fifteen years earlier to create the compact disc.
